Project 1: Analysis

China has grown significantly since the late 70s and early 80s due to Special Economic Zones (SEZ) like Shenzhen in south east China and increased trading with both the US and the rest of world (Harrison and Palumbo, 2019). The vast majority of the records only start in the 90s and the early 2000s; with only a handful of indicators such as the number Diphtheria, Pertussis and Measles cases starting as far back as the 70s. All indicators lead to the same conclusion. As China developed, there was a significant increase in the quality of healthcare and sanitation, resulting in a decrease in the number of cases of preventable diseases such as measles or cholera. However, there has been an increase in obesity, shown by number of children under five who are overweight, which is experiencing an increase. These indicators do not show the number of cases of conditions attributed to more “western” lifestyle and diet, such as COPD, type two diabetes, or obesity related problems.
